History

The Gaston County Jail was first established in 1846, shortly after the creation of Gaston County. The original jail was located on West Main Street in Gastonia, North Carolina. It was a small, one-story building made of brick and stone. The jail housed both male and female inmates, and conditions were often overcrowded and unsanitary.

In 1883, the Gaston County Commissioners decided to build a new jail. The new jail was located on East Main Street in Gastonia and was designed to be more spacious and secure than the previous one. The new jail also had separate cells for male and female inmates.

20th Century

In the early 20th century, the Gaston County Jail underwent several renovations and expansions. In 1912, a new cell block was added to the jail, and in 1924, a new hospital wing was constructed. In 1954, the jail was again expanded, and a new administration building was added.

In 1972, the Gaston County Commissioners decided to build a new jail. The new jail was located on Cox Road in Gastonia and was designed to be a modern, state-of-the-art facility. The new jail opened in 1975 and is currently the Gaston County Jail.

Recent History

In recent years, the Gaston County Jail has undergone several renovations and improvements. In 2010, the jail was remodeled to create a new medical unit and a new mental health unit. In 2012, the jail was expanded to add a new cell block.
